 Members' Evening

Friday 7th November 2014

at The Red Kite, Winlaton Mill

 Image:   June Atkinson
On Friday November 7th,  forty-one members gathered at the Red Kite pub in Winlaton Mill.  An excellent meal was served - a good plate of food which was piping hot.

Sylvia gave an update on members' events and the increasing need for fund raising. The five year funding from the RSPB has ended and we need to generate additional funds to support our monitoring activities.  The very successful extended monitoring survey this year highlighted the benefits of volunteers looking for territories and nest sites.

Austin has organised a fund-raising event on December 19th at the Coach Man in Whickham.  The Race night he organised raised £184 for our funds this year. Tickets for his December event cost £5.  Thanks to Austin for his support.

Judy and Jackey had organised the food arrangements for tonight's event.  Our thanks to them for their efforts.  Fiona was also busy and she sold a number of the Red Kite calendars and sets of 'Flight of the kite' cards.

The evening finished with a film from Noel Adamson, who is a local historian and film maker.  He has worked with our Red Kite project since 2005.  He showed his first DVD made during the Northern Kites project.  This excellent film was very interesting and provided invaluable information for a number of new members. Copies of this DVD are available for £5.  His new DVD based on the work of FoRK will be available at a later date. Our thanks to Noel for a super end to the evening.

WE WELCOME OUR FIRST PATRON ~ TRAI ANFIELD

In accepting this important role, Trai says:

"I am honoured to become Patron of such an important and successful conservation initiative as Friends of Red Kites. I have admired the work of the group since it started out in 2004 as the Northern Kites Project. It has been terrific to see such an iconic species as the red kite return to this area and flourish beyond expectations. The birds themselves are magnificent, and they bring benefits to the whole community.

However, Friends of Red Kites work is far from over. We encourage local communities to learn about the birds and get involved in the project, monitor the population and strive to protect red kites and their prey species from deliberate and accidental poisoning. This unfortunately is a real problem, which has led to the deaths of a significant number of birds since their reintroduction. We will continue to work very closely with local landowners to prevent it."

Friends of Red Kites was inaugurated in 2009, when the Northern Kites Project, begun in 2004 to re-introduce 94 young kites donated by the Chilterns group, ended. Too great a legacy had been left for the work not to be continued. A number of long-standing volunteers agreed to establish a group and become the guardians of these majestic birds of prey, which grace our skies and enrich people's lives. We have gone from strength to strength and our membership is now 331.

Trai's collaboration in our Event at Sage Gateshead, ON RED KITE WINGS, was acclaimed.

Trai created a film to accompany Ian Fleming's composition "The Red Kite"  to the audience's delight.

Kaleel Zibe

I'm delighted to announce that eight of my recent red kite mosaic pictures are to be used to produce greetings cards to raise money for radio-tagging the kites. Friends of Red Kites (FoRK) commissioned me last year to take photos of a huge mosaic red kite next to several North East England landmark sites. The resulting images have been touring galleries round the region. For more of the images, please click http://lnkd.in/bjjkMQt You might recognise a couple of local icons!

 Alex Roberts Great work!

Alan Whisker Outstanding, and in a great cause too!

Kaleel Zibe Thanks guys!

June Atkinson During the whole of May, our Flight of the Red Kite Photographic Exhibition, incorporating Kaleel's fantastic images, has been at The World Heritage Visitor Centre near Durham Cathedral. We have welcomed people from all over the world! The mosaic kite was built on Palace Green on Saturday 24 May and will be built again at Sage Gateshead on Saturday 5 July as part of our Anniversary Celebrations. The Exhibition will also be there; it's another and possibly the final chance to see what has been described as an "amazing" and "important" project carried out by Friends of Red Kites in the north east of England. www.friendsofredkites.org.uk

James Holmes Well done
